Background of En-ROADS?
Developed collaboratively by Climate Interactive, the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative, and Ventana Systems, the En-ROADS Climate Simulator is an online system dynamics model built on the best available scientific research. It is calibrated using a comprehensive array of integrated assessment, climate, and energy models. En-ROADS is rooted in systems thinking and incorporates the latest knowledge from international policy, climate solutions, energy dynamics, and climate justice. This holistic approach helps participants visualise the interconnectedness of various factors, driving the development of effective and equitable climate action.
How Does the Workshop Work?
The En-ROADS Climate Workshop cuts through the complexity of climate discourse, equipping policymakers, educators, businesses, and the media with the understanding necessary to implement equitable and impactful climate solutions. Guided by a trained facilitator, participants engage in a collaborative exercise using the En-ROADS Climate Solutions Simulator to test diverse strategies for addressing climate change. Participants can propose solutions such as enhancing energy efficiency, implementing carbon pricing, imposing fossil fuel taxes, reducing deforestation, and exploring carbon dioxide removal techniques.
The primary goal is to create scenarios that limit global warming to well below 2°C, with aspirations of reaching 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels—targets established by the Paris Climate Agreement. Workshops can be conducted online or in person and are adaptable for groups of all sizes. Participants from diverse backgrounds and varying levels of familiarity with climate change leave with valuable insights. Formats can range from brief sessions to half-day workshops, accommodating any number of attendees.

Benefits of an En-ROADS Workshop
The En-ROADS Climate Workshop facilitates connections between participants' values and actionable solutions to ensure a resilient future. Users quickly observe how various global climate policies and actions—such as electrifying transportation, pricing carbon, and enhancing agricultural practices—affect crucial factors like energy prices, temperature, air quality, and sea level rise.
Peer-reviewed studies indicate that those who engage with En-ROADS feel empowered, gaining improved understanding and connectivity regarding climate issues. Government offices, classrooms, and corporate boardrooms worldwide have witnessed how testing alternate scenarios inspires individuals to take action. Experience with En-ROADS transforms participants’ perspectives on climate change, fostering deeper emotional connections to the issue. These interactive workshops equip participants with essential insights, encourage new perspectives, and instill grounded hope, all within an enjoyable and engaging format.
