why this matters now

Climate change is increasingly shaping organisational decisions; across strategy, governance, risk, operations, supply chains, disclosure, and long-term planning. Yet within many organisations, understanding often varies significantly. Some participants are highly familiar with climate-related issues, while others are engaging with them for the first time. Increasingly, having baseline climate and earth systems literacy is no longer being treated as optional sustainability knowledge, but as part of informed governance, prudent strategic oversight, and long-term organisational decision-making. Climate Fresk provides a structured way to build a shared, science-based baseline understanding of how the climate system works, why it is changing, and the causes and consequences of climate disruption, helping participants develop a common understanding and shared visual map of the climate system regardless of prior experience or expertise. As leadership scholar and Bloomberg Opinion columnist Gautam Mukunda put it in January 2026: “Make 2026 the year you get climate literate.”

What is Climate Fresk

Climate Fresk is a globally recognised, science-based workshop built on the research of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In a facilitated, team-based format, participants work together using 42 illustrated cards to map the cause-and-effect relationships driving climate change and its impacts on ecosystems, societies, and economies. As participants progressively connect the cards, they collectively build a shared visual representation, or “fresk”, of the climate system. Rather than passively receiving information, participants build understanding through collaboration, dialogue, and collective intelligence, helping complex climate dynamics become clearer, more memorable, and easier to discuss within a single three hour facilitated workshop. The workshop is specifically designed to work across mixed levels of experience, enabling both climate newcomers and experienced sustainability professionals to build a shared baseline understanding together, so organisational discussions can begin from a more common foundation of climate knowledge and systems understanding.

How the workshop works

Climate Fresk is often described as following a “Head, Heart, Hands” progression, moving from scientific understanding, to creativity and emotional engagement, to discussion and action.
Phase 1 - Understanding
Participants work together to build their shared climate fresk, mapping how the climate system functions and why it is changing through dialogue, collaboration, and collective intelligence.
Phase 2 - Creativity
Participants collectively transform the fresk into a shared visual representation using illustrations, colours, symbols, and text. This phase helps anchor understanding, encourage ownership, and create space for reflection before discussion and action.
Phase 3 - Reflection & Emotions
A facilitated reflection phase allows participants to acknowledge and process emotional responses to climate change and organisational implications, helping reduce psychological barriers that can otherwise inhibit constructive engagement.
Phase 4 - Discussion & Action
Participants explore practical responses, organisational implications, and actions, with discussion lightly tailored to organisational context, priorities, or its sustainability initiatives.

No. The workshop is designed for all levels, from beginners through to experienced sustainability professionals.
Is this just climate training?
No. Climate Fresk builds a shared, baseline, science-based understanding that supports organisational discussions, governance, strategy, and decision-making. Unlike many climate training programs where participants receive information passively, Climate Fresk uses a facilitated, collaborative, and highly visual format where participants work together to build and visualise the climate system themselves.
